For Post & Parcel (P&P) companies, deliveries must be on time, every time. This contrasts a SOTI study that says 98% of IT managers in P&P deal with issues that delay shipments every week.
During COVID-19, PostNord had to deliver more items to more locations and more customers. PostNord already delivered 1.2 billion letters and 226 million parcels annually across a combined 490,996 square kilometers . How could they keep up?
Learn how SOTI helped PostNord customize their mobility infrastructure and why over 4,000 P&P organizations trust SOTI to help ensure no deliveries are late or lost.
Revenue recovery thanks to certified dimensioning

Head of automation product dimensioning
Vitronic Dr-Ing. Stein Bildverarbeitungssysteme GmbH
Germany
Due to increasing e-commerce and the resulting higher volumes of small shipments and non-cubic parcel formats, parcel logistics providers are facing new challenges. In particular, smaller and irregularly shaped objects must be reliably captured and sorted. Certified dimensioning is vital for CEP providers to realize automatic invoicing to protect their revenue. Vitronic provides dimensioning systems that can detect even the tiniest items from 20mm in height on all conveyor systems. In-line and with throughput speeds up to 3m/s, the system captures the dimensions and contours of the transported shipments in any rotational position along the conveyor system.
CEP - how to adapt to a volatile market

CEO
Graphmasters SA
Switzerland
CEP services are challenged to plan and execute their operations in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous business environment (‘VUCA’). For logistics networks, it is of greater and greater strategic importance to include a VUCA foresight into corporate planning and operations. Services that understand and analyze changing scenarios based on a combination of real-time insights and predictions will have dramatic strategic and operational advantages. A new paradigm is emerging here. The integration of non-linear circumstances into corporate planning models will increase the resilience of operators, even in a VUCA world.
How connected IDs will transform the logistics industry

Market development director - logistics
Avery Dennison
Germany
In today’s supply chain, it is critical to have full visibility from source to final destination, despite the amount of changing form factors of products, pallets and parcels between the various silos. Connected IDs unlock unseen accuracy along this journey and build a trusted base for verification, accounting, brand protection and sustainability measures. A fully connected supply chain powered by data creation, capture, interpretation, storage, sharing and connectivity is the foundation for achieving greater efficiency. In a time of ever-increasing volumes and shortening transit times, it’s the only way to maximize profit while coping with new levels of service demands.

The presentation will address, if all collapses overnight, how to adapt to whatever situation – even to the war situation in Ukraine, by continuing to deliver under extreme and risky circumstances. For years, as a last-mile service, Omniva has been delivering postal and parcel service to Ukraine from all over the world, as well as delivering from Ukraine to countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. February 24, 2022 came as a shock to the whole world as well as to Omniva. Even though the red flag was up, as with so many others, Omniva was shocked about the occurrence of the unthinkable. Here is our story!

CEO
Romanian Post
Romania
Posts around the world are on a race to become the first consumer choice and find THE digital model. But what if you have a lot of catching up to do? Do you plunge in and challenge the system, or go by the book and risk being too late? Time pressure drives quick investment but generates many gaps and a risk of slow organizational adjustment to change, while the thorough analysis and steady decision making process requires many resources and impacts a company’s agility. Valentin will speak about weighing these risks and what the best solution for Romanian Post is.

How returns have redefined the relationships between consumers and retailers
Co-founder and CEO
ZigZag Global
UK
As more consumers than ever before head online, returns have naturally become an integral part of the e-commerce experience. 79% of consumers check the returns policy before making a purchase and 46% will abandon their basket if they are not impressed with what they see. The returns process is redefining relationships between customers and retailers like never before. ZigZag will explore the behavior of German consumers around the returns process, utilizing ZigZag’s exclusive consumer research. Faster refunds, quicker collections or convenient drop-off locations, low-cost or free options, tracking capabilities and more: the list of customer expectations grows each year.
Not all returns are equal. Applying business logic and automation to the world of reverse logistics.

Director of business development - parcel solutions
BlueCrest
USA
In the migration from brick-and-mortar stores to e-commerce, return orders represent one of the final frontiers. Many stores allow customers to evaluate a product and decide whether to purchase—some call this “try before you buy”. While some verticals have integrated this into their business model, others still wrestle with challenges like second-market, fraud, the cost of logistics, green initiatives, and roundtrip packaging. In this talk, we explore dynamics that drive processing decisions, as well as the applied automation that empowers an operation to keep up with an ever-changing environment.

In the future, we will offer a solution that allows customers to requalify disposable shipments worldwide, reuse them or dispose it professionally, so that we can reduce the CO2 footprint and offer a sustainable solution. For this, we have various hubs around the world through which our boxes are either requalified or recycled. Furthermore, we can use material that has a very high recycled content. We would also like to present the possibilities and obstacles.

Supply chain decarbonization is one of the most impactful measures companies need to take to mitigate climate change. However, decarbonization at-scale is challenged by a perceived lack of accessibility to relevant and accurate data. Hence, many stakeholders are left behind with almost no hope to strategize their path towards a climate friendly business ecosystem. This session will focus on how digitization is employed to provide ways and means for decarbonization to gain a robust foothold within the logistics’ corporate value chain. Hear how AWS customers are taking data-driven approach and leveraging purpose-built technological solutions from AWS to proactively implement a strategy to decarbonize their supply chain.

Rethinking urban logistics

Director of strategy and business development
Solystic
France
What are we talking about, when we are talking about urban logistics? In Paris, one million deliveries are made every single day, producing one million tonnes of CO2 every year; liveability, congestion, air pollution, CO2 emissions, not to mention impacts on road traffic, noise, health and safety. This is just an example of how rethinking urban logistics is a key point of the next future: securing life and healthy conditions while providing citizens with easy access to services and goods. A comprehensive organization and intelligent automation of logistic operation can typically contribute to reconcile economic growth, environmental balance and social progress.

Last mile e-solutions for the post

Post & parcel business development manager
Scoobic
Spain
The era of e-mobility is an unstoppable reality and is here to stay. There is social, business and political awareness of the need to adopt sustainable transport models, and the new light electric vehicles have a fundamental role to play here. Cities are also evolving. There are fewer cars and vans and more pedestrian zones and low-speed streets where there is more space for pedestrians, scooters, e-bikes, e-cargo bikes and mopeds and less for larger vehicles. At the same time, the growing demand for e-commerce is driving the move from letters to bulky packages. Sustainability, cities without vans and a greater volume of packages undoubtedly make last-mile delivery operations a challenge, for which Scoobic provides different solutions that will be introduced in the presentation.

Many consumers don't take the time to browse your site in detail. As a consequence they submit questions that take precious time away from your service agents. 23% of consumers do not order from a retailer again after a bad experience with a delivery issue.
Increase consumers satisfaction, they will be delighted having their answer on the spot and avoid your retailers to churn.
Boosting automation parcel handling via robotics

Today, automation is the key to efficient and flexible parcel handling. However, many consignments – due to their size, shape or packaging – pose a threat to automated processes. Currently, these items require manual handling, which is time-consuming and cost-intensive. How can a robotic solution do the job automatically in the operational process flow? Is highly-efficient picking of items already possible? Körber’s VarioPick gets the job done fully automatically and four times faster!
Optimizing your footprint while handling smalls

Global market director, parcel

The growth of the e-commerce sector continues to have a significant impact on the industry. Not only must rapid deliveries and later cut-off times be factored in, but the quantity of small parcels has significantly increased. With the now universal labor shortages and with real estate at a prime, parcel companies have to increase their capacity while accommodating various parcel sizes, optimizing their facilities’ footprint and reducing their dependency on labor. Adam will discuss how facilities can be optimized through automation and will share Vanderlande’s vision for the future of parcel handling.

Every parcel delivery player has been affected by deep market mutations over the last few years. Indeed, they must cope with two pressing issues: the rise in volumes and in variability. Activity thus becomes less predictable as volumes can rise and fall very quickly over the course of a few weeks, sometimes days. For these cost-driven organizations where business repeatability was once everything, this new world requires them to become more agile, through new methods and new tools. In this presentation, we will explain how any parcel delivery player can leverage the most advanced AI algorithms to optimize and adapt its territory sectorization.

With pressure to get more deliveries in less time, the tendency to cut corners has become the norm. Unsafe vehicles being driven with check engine lights on, drivers not locking vehicles when stopped for a delivery, and leaving the engine running has become a common ocurrence. As a leader responsible for fleet efficiency and safety, having the mechanism to immobilize unsafe vehicles before they are taken, andlock vehicles that are stopped for delivery are just a few of the things that the digital transformation of last mile can do.

Lockers and Pudo are used massively in B2C applications of large e-commerce platforms. Thousands of lockers get distributed throughout our cities, allowing customers to collect packages from large logistics platforms. But what happens to small businesses in these influence points? They do not have the possibility of offering convenience because they do not have a technological platform for providing their products to end customers digitally and in 24/7 pickup. We change this paradigm with the solution of Manzaning, the marketplace designed for local ecosystems! We enable the purchase and logistic distribution of products from small businesses in cities and public markets. In integration with our standard and refrigerated lockers, we close the gap for local trading with our unique value proposition.

Increasing last mile deliveries in city centres with their negative consequences are directly impacting urban populations and are posing significant challenges to public policy makers and transporters. Highly dense, congested and polluted cities are asking for more restrictive ecological public policies, and also the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions require strong action from all sectors, including last-mile logistic providers. According to studies and actual experiences one potential solution to address these challenges can be the introduction of electrical vehicles. Business Experience (BX) is very much a new category of leadership that savvy CEOs and their leadership teams will embrace as we move deeper into the coming decade. In many ways, BX is the inevitable consequence of the fact that we had been defining the domain of customer-centricity too narrowly as a set of touch points over the past 20 years. Now, customer-centricity needs to be the driving force throughout an entire company in ways that most organizations have yet to embrace. If they do, they can thrive. We will explore what a BX-led approach looks like for a postal operator and offer a view of digital that matters to differentiate and cut through a sea of sameness.

What is the common factor between operational efficiency, great consumer experience, and high customer retention? At Posti, we believe it to be sustainability. We’ve taken the role of not only doing what is requested from us; but seeking a key role in leading the climate effort. Sometimes these actions lead to cost savings in operations. Other times we improve consumer experience – as when our PUDO network better aligns with people’s daily commutes. Also, we have heard from eCommerce retailer customers that our leadership encourages them to go even further with their sustainability agenda. In the end, for all our work to positively impact our planet, each action needs to contribute to the roadmap of net-zero emissions.
Making Germany’s best touchpoint network even better – 20 years of growth and innovation in the Packstation System

Deutsche Post AG
Germany
Deutsche Post DHL has been the first logistics provider to introduce a nationwide network of parcel lockers, starting as early as 2003 to provide an easy and customer-focused 24/7 solution for the last mile in post and parcel delivery. This network has been continually expanded in the last 20 years, going from 1,500 lockers in 2008 to more than 10,500 currently. Further expansion to 15,000 lockers is scheduled for the coming years. At the same time, the network is being continually improved through innovation, most recently by the introduction of the 'lean Packstation' which is entirely operated through the customers’ and carriers’ smartphone app and therefore works without screen, printer or scanner. More than 20 million customers are registered for Packstation in Germany and regularly show very high satisfaction with this solution. In addition, delivery to Packstation enables a significant reduction in the CO2 emissions on the last mile.

Using the of art of strategic agility to navigate the future role of postal operators in Europe

Director of strategy
Pošta Slovenije
Slovenia
European postal operators have been undergoing a business transformation for years. Now, after the pandemic, they face a plethora of new challenges including energy shocks, high inflation, disrupted supply chains, workforce shortage, digital transformation challenges, geopolitical instability, new rivals and rising sustainability demands. The future might hold even more challenges (and opportunities) – demographic change, infrastructure transformation, climate crisis, security challenges, another virus.
Many executives thus find the need to revise and adapt their strategies and operating models at a rapid pace. Postal operators however are among the larger, often state-owned and risk averse organizations in their countries, so they need to embrace agility and speed up change.
In her presentation, Jasmina will discuss what “the great ones” seem to be doing great right now to rapidly adapt to the “perfect storm” and stay at the forefront of the post and parcel-delivery industry in the coming years.

The Swiss Post wants to stablish a vision for their future CRM system for private customers. For that, the needs and expectations of both customers and employees need to be considered. To achieve this goal, we accomplished both a quantitative analysis of the customer data and a qualitative analysis (customer and employee interviews). It was not technology but rather the gap between the expectations of the employees and the wishes of the customers that finally shaped the vision for the future CRM system for private customers.

Variable delivery time slots in e-grocery and e-business

Independent researcher
Mikhail Konstantinov
Germany
If you order a delivery time slot, then it is most natural if you personally, and not the delivery company, decide when it is convenient for you to accept delivery, choose time points 'from' and 'till' and get the delivery price. Delivery slots become variable. The home office, which has become popular due to the pandemic, simply requires long 10-12-hour delivery slots, because customers are at home all day, but the UK e-grocery segment, for example, still imposes short 1-hour slots on everyone. Why do e-grocers act contrary to logic and against their own benefit? We will try to solve this riddle.

Why the quality of your data matters in cross-border eCommerce

Hurricane Commerce
UK
Major regulatory events during the last two years - more than in the previous 20 years - have dramatically altered the cross-border eCommerce landscape.
Events including ICS2, the abolition of the VAT exemption on low-value goods in the EU, UK and elsewhere and the greater enforcement of the US STOP Act now mean that postal operators, carriers and all other players in the global supply chain must be able to harness complete, accurate and compliant cross-border electronic data.
The Ukraine conflict has further highlighted the need for compliance screening. Rob Dundas assesses the landscape and explains what's needed to succeed.

How to robotize order picking and inducting packaging machines or sorters?

CEO
Fizyr
Netherlands
Labour shortages in the logistics industry are becoming a recurring problem while working conditions need to be enhanced. The automation of robotic picking and placement, often repetitive, dull, heavy and therefore sometimes unhealthy is the next big revolution. For robots to handle an exceptional variation of items and parcels without prior information, computer vision software using deep learning is needed. Machines learning applied correctly enables robots to grasp objects that vary in shape, size, color, material and how they are stacked. How to build the businesses case? Lessons learned and what makes mixed (SKU) depalletization and container unloading specific? How to perform label detection and to prevent non-conveyables from being placed on a sorter?

After the 24th of February for most businesses in Ukraine, there were more reasons to quit, rather than to proceed, and this question stood up in front of our company as well. The key issues in making the decision were as follows: our staff, our partners abroad, and the operation of legal customs services. As we got all the positive feedbacks, we started to search for new solutions, as we understood the high importance of our work, especially during those days. We have succeeded, and as a result already in March, we delivered up to 300 parcels across the country.

Many workplaces struggle to find a smooth logistics solution for inbound parcels. Workflows are messy, the process is too manual, parcels are hard to trace. There are many parcel tracking solutions on the market, but most don't fully meet a company's needs. And if they do, they're expensive, complex and difficult to set up and maintain. In this session, we will discuss what type of challenges companies face and what factors are important to consider. We will give examples from Scandinavian companies needing a simple solution and companies with complex workflows across multiple locations.

There is an ongoing dispute amongst parcel system designers about the most efficient way of processing parcels in medium/large throughput processing centers. The two available options, singulated and bulk flow, have both their challenges. The limiting factor for achievable system throughput is often the unloading process. Bulk conveying and downstream processing/unloading also opens up opportunities for further savings. Körber provides a broad range of bulk processing equipment, including a variety of unloading, conveying, diverting and singulation products. The right equipment paired with long-time operational experience enables Körber to provide real-world bulk flow processing solutions.

Small parcels? How to deal with them in automated sortation

Systems director
Beumer Group
Denmark
Transforming CEP operators into modern e-commerce logistics providers can be a painful process when a large part of the parcel mix contains small and irregularly shaped shipments. Small parcels make up an ever-increasing part of daily production but cannot always be handled automatically by conventional sortation systems. So how can CEP operators optimize their smalls handling into existing production? The solution is to recreate the sortation system design for increased sorting flexibility that can make a real difference. The added benefits comprise optimized use of floor space and the ability to incorporate small items handling into an automatic flow.

The decade of the 2000s represented a turbulent time in postal history, during which European national postal operators faced a combination of market liberalization, digital substitution, and resulting declining mail volumes. The decade ended with the global financial crisis, which only accelerated substitution away from physical mail towards digital communication solutions. This became a dynamic period of strategic renewal, but competing visions emerged concerning the future of the post. This presentation will illustrate the three main divergent visions of the future that emerged and discuss how these influenced the strategic options chosen by operators over the last ten years.

Like many other logistics sectors, parcel logistics has been experiencing a continuous increase in shipment volumes for years. This rapid growth poses major challenges for the CEP industry. In contrast, media logistics struggle with enormous cost increases due to constant circulation losses. The objective of the research project Smart Multi-Use Logistics is to digitally support the cooperation of these logistics sectors. It promises a solution to the current challenges, but at the same time requires end-to-end digitization and standardization within and across company boundaries. The use of electric vehicles will also ensure a significantly improved environmental balance.
