Seur to build logistics center serving Southern Spain
Express transportation company Seur will build a €3m (US$3.27m) logistics center in Las Salinas, in El Puerto de Santa María in Spain.
The 3,500m2 center will occupy a 9,500m2 plot. It will be equipped with a cold chamber for the management of temperature-controlled shipments, and have five docks for trailers and 70 for vans. The company intends to centralize all its activity in the area, meaning all e-commerce customer shipments will be managed from these facilities.
More than 80% of retailers seek control of outsourced delivery networks
Delivery experience platform FarEye’research report has revealed that although 57% of retailers have outsourced their delivery networks over the past five years, 84% of retailers claim their organization needs more control over their outsourced delivery networks.
The report – Eye on Last-mile Delivery – was conducted in partnership with custom survey company Researchscape International. The trend of retailers outsourcing their delivery networks contrasted with the finding that only 27% of the surveyed retailers use a single last-mile delivery platform – yet 72% believed it to be extremely or very beneficial to merge all technology solutions into one platform (offering a single view, more agility, control and lower cost).
USPS to install QR codes on its leased trucks and trailers
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is to place new two-dimensional barcodes on its leased box trucks and trailers.
The new 99V barcodes use two-dimensional data matrices – also known as QR codes – and are replacing traditional barcodes. When scanned, they provide a vehicle identification number and information about the vehicle, such as its type and dimensions. They are expected to be more robust but can still be scanned if they do get damaged.
Volta Trucks to produce over 300 electric urban delivery trucks
Electric commercial vehicle manufacturer Volta Trucks has confirmed it will produce over 300 purpose-built fully electric medium-duty urban delivery trucks in 2023.
The company estimates that these trucks will bring in around €85m (US$92.3m) associated revenue. Series production vehicles are due to start rolling off the production line at the company’s contract manufacturing facility in Steyr, Austria, in early 2023, with the plant ready to meet customer demand for the purpose-built electric urban delivery truck.
Amazon workers strike in Coventry
Staff at the Amazon depot in Coventry, UK, have gone on strike today (Jan 25) in a UK first. The Amazon workers at the fulfillment center voted in December 2022 to walk out over the company’s 50p (US$0.61) per hour pay rise offer.
The GMB Union, which represents the workers, reported that an industrial action ballot that closed on December 16 last year saw a 63% turnout and of this, 98% voted to strike.

Hestia nominates seven candidates for Pitney Bowes board of directors
Hestia Capital Management, the third largest stockholder of Pitney Bowes, has nominated seven candidates for election to the company’s nine-member board of directors.
The election will be held at the company’s 2023 annual meeting of stockholders. Hestia has also released a presentation that details a sampling of current leadership’s failings that have led to significant stockholder value destruction.

NCR to install Position Imaging iPickup Points across Europe and USA
Package and advanced asset tracking company Position Imaging has signed a multinational service provider agreement with NCR for the company to become its installation, service and support partner for its iPickup Point retail fulfillment platform.
The iPickup Point platform is a secure package management system that uses AI-based computer vision technology to provide a self-service package pick up and drop off (PUDO) service to retail customers. Retailers can adopt the iPickup Point solution to automate retail fulfillment tasks, including click and collect, without needing additional staff.
